Pad printing, laser engraving or UV printing to branded pens: What are the differences?
The design is applied onto the branded pens either via pad printing, UV printing or laser engraving technology. The method used for a particular pen is specified in the product description of the selected pens.
Pad printing
Pad printing uses an indirect printing process. The ink is transferred from the cliché onto the ballpoint pens, pencils, rollerball pens or fountain pens via an elastic silicone pad. This printing process is the most common method to print images on promotional products.
UV Printing
With UV printing, the ink does not absorb into the material but is deposited on the surface. This enables almost all materials to be UV printed. Immediately after applying the ink on the writing instrument, it is cured using UV lamps. This technique delivers a classy print result and creates a high-quality look.
Laser engraving
Laser engraving is the practice of using a powerful laser to engrave the desired image onto the branded pen. Laser engraved designs are water-proof, wipeable and extremely durable, because the design is engraved into the material of the pen and not printed on the surface. This means that the laser removes a wafer-thin film at the printed area.

Important information on creating the artwork for writing instruments
Three things are important when creating the artwork for branded pens:
1. Creating design elements as vector graphics
To achieve best print results in high quality when printing on ballpoint pens, fountain pens, rollerball pens, pencils and other writing instruments, it is important to create the design elements as vector graphics. Magnify the image to see whether you are working with a vector graphic or pixel graphic. Vector graphics hardly lose quality when magnified, because the vectors are made of basic geometric elements such as lines, curves, circles and polygons instead of pixels. The stored information can thus be reproduced more easily when scaled. For printing writing instruments this means that you need data that can be scaled down cleanly to fit on the small printable area of a pen. So vector graphics are what you need.
2. creating spot colours
Unlike classic print material, promotional items are printed with Pantone spot colours and not with CMYK colours. When designing your artwork, therefore create the colours of your artwork as spot colours. Name the colour swatch exactly as the Pantone spot colour you intend to use. Depending on the product, you can print branded pens in one or two colours. When creating the spot colours, bear in mind that metallic colours and neon colours are not possible.
3. Exporting the artwork as pdf
It is important to export the finished artwork as a PDF and upload this file to Onlineprinters. When printing on writing instruments, we do not accept JPEG or TIFF file formats or embedded JPEG or TIFF images in the PDF file, because the design elements are not saved as vector data. To avoid quality loss of the printed design, we print PDF files that contain vectorised data only.
